Koukoumitsa, Vonitsa: A Small Island in the Ambracian Gulf Through FPV

Just outside Vonitsa, surrounded by the calm waters of the Ambracian Gulf, lies a small green island that feels almost suspended in time: Koukoumitsa.

A Small Island You Can Reach on Foot

Koukoumitsa sits just off the coast of Vonitsa and is connected to the mainland by a pedestrian bridge, creating one of the most distinctive views in the area.

Pine trees, calm water and open views across the gulf give the island a simple but highly cinematic character. Hidden within the greenery is the small church of Agios Nektarios, adding another layer to the atmosphere of the place.

Vonitsa from a Different Perspective

From above, the geometry of the landscape becomes even more striking.

The narrow connection between the island and the shore, the deep green of the pine trees and the changing tones of the water create a view that is difficult to fully appreciate from ground level.

FPV offers a different way to experience this setting compared with a traditional aerial shot. It allows the camera to move close to the environment, follow the natural lines of the island and create the feeling that the viewer is actually travelling through the landscape.

Behind the Flight

The goal of this flight was not simply to show Koukoumitsa from above.

I wanted the movement to follow the natural shape of the location — from the water and the pedestrian bridge to the greenery of the island — so that the film would feel more like a short journey than a sequence of separate drone shots.

That is what I find most interesting about FPV: the ability to connect different elements of a location in one continuous cinematic experience.

A Small Piece of the Ambracian Gulf

Koukoumitsa does not need dramatic scale or huge landscapes to stand out.

Its character comes from its simplicity: a small green island, only a short distance from Vonitsa, surrounded by the calm waters of the Ambracian Gulf.

Sometimes, these quieter places are the ones that are most worth discovering from a different perspective.
